Photomatix HDR: Sinister Gratification

September 25th, 2008 No Comments

Ok, I bit the bullet and bought the Photomatix HDR software. I’ve learned how to do the HDR conversion in photoshop and they turned out really stunning. But, I couldn’t leave well enough alone.

I read countless reviews when first learning about HDR, and found that most people recommended the Photomatix software, but similar results could be achieved with Photoshop. Not wanting to pony up the $99 price tag, I told myself I was content with Photoshop.

Manifest Hope Recap

August 28th, 2008 No Comments

A quick recap from the Manifest Hope show at the Andenken Gallery and an adjacent warehouse during the Democratic National Convention.

This was truly an inspiring art showing. I genuinely feel moved, more than I have by politics anyway in the past — it was very cool seeing so many younger people getting involved and showing their support. Yes, we can!

Sneak Peek: Tattoo Drawing

August 14th, 2008 1 Comment

Just a quick sneak peek at some commissioned artwork I finally started for a clients tattoo. This is a shot of  more or less the final pencils. I scanned in and printed it out in only cyan at 15% (trying to emulate comic blue lines for inking). We’ll see if it actually helps… it’s so faint anyway it should work fine.

On a side note, I really need to either invest in some good pen nibbs, or I should have printed on some better paper — I’m guessing it’s a combination of the two though. Enjoy! I’ll post up the final once it’s done.

T-Shirt Aficionados… Prepare To Be Wowed

August 7th, 2008 1 Comment

Just a quick shout-out, I just got my 2nd order from this site and I’m thrilled with them. I’m really digging this trend of cool shirts being printed up on quality materials. It seems like more and more shirts I come across are being printed on American Apparel tees rather than something in the Haynes Beefy T area. *gag* Plus they have these excellent labels printed in the inside A+ attention to detail. Spot Gloss.

If you haven’t seen Design by Humans, make your way over there and check out their shirts. American Apparel + Amazing Art = 2 thumbs up, way up.

P.S. “Spot Gloss” will be explained in an upcoming post, once I get my spot gloss awards in.

Shepard Fairey Donates an Original “HOPE”

Shepard Fairey Donates an Original \"HOPE\"

I’m passing this along from it’s original source at Joy Engine. I’ve loved this piece since I first saw it, and it’s really cool to see one of the originals.

Obama Hope“Shepard Fairey, the contemporary artist whose irreverent works have deconstructed the meaning and methods of propaganda, ironically became the creator of one of the most potent political images in recent history - the OBAMA “HOPE” poster. The image found such immediate resonance with Obama supporters that it became ubiquitous throughout the primary campaign and across the web.”

Sketching: Spawn

Sketch 01 banner

Here we go… I’m finally getting back to doing some drawing for fun. As I said in a previous post, one of the reasons I started this whole thing was to make myself get into drawing again.

So, here we go.. back to my roots: COMICS!

Ink Part Deux - Ichigoichie

May 7th, 2008 No Comments

I’m pleased to announce that number 2 is on the way… tattoos that is. I recently commissioned Master Calligrapher Eri Takase to paint the artwork for my next piece. Its been about 7 years since my last one, and I’m ready for another.

The problem (or blessing) with being a designer/artist myself is that I’m fairly picky. It took me years to finalize the first tattoo I got, and haven’t been in a rush for the next one. Eri worked with me to create one that I absolutely LOVE!
