Spot Gloss Award

August 14th, 2008 No Comments

Behold! The Spot Gloss Award A.K.A “one great use for Overnight Print’s short run orders.”

A little back-story… A colleague and I were ‘geeking’ out about the spot gloss on the logo of recruiting cards we just did for DEI (ok, I was geeking out, and he was humoring me). And henceforth started using the term ‘spot gloss’ to define little things that get you excited, that few (if any) people around you would appreciate at all.

Sneak Peek: Tattoo Drawing

August 14th, 2008 1 Comment

Just a quick sneak peek at some commissioned artwork I finally started for a clients tattoo. This is a shot of  more or less the final pencils. I scanned in and printed it out in only cyan at 15% (trying to emulate comic blue lines for inking). We’ll see if it actually helps… it’s so faint anyway it should work fine.

On a side note, I really need to either invest in some good pen nibbs, or I should have printed on some better paper — I’m guessing it’s a combination of the two though. Enjoy! I’ll post up the final once it’s done.

“Only What You Need” Denver Water Campaign

August 12th, 2008 No Comments

If you don’t have the pleasure of living in Denver, you’ve probably missed the Denver Water campaign. I hate to admit that the first time I took notice of it, I wasn’t cruising the streets… but perusing the pages of a design annual (I’m guessing HOW/Print or Communication Arts). I always love when Denver or Boulder makes it on the design map, but Sukle has knocked this one out of the park!

T-Shirt Aficionados… Prepare To Be Wowed

August 7th, 2008 1 Comment

Just a quick shout-out, I just got my 2nd order from this site and I’m thrilled with them. I’m really digging this trend of cool shirts being printed up on quality materials. It seems like more and more shirts I come across are being printed on American Apparel tees rather than something in the Haynes Beefy T area. *gag* Plus they have these excellent labels printed in the inside A+ attention to detail. Spot Gloss.

If you haven’t seen Design by Humans, make your way over there and check out their shirts. American Apparel + Amazing Art = 2 thumbs up, way up.

P.S. “Spot Gloss” will be explained in an upcoming post, once I get my spot gloss awards in.

The Method… the Action Method

July 28th, 2008 1 Comment

I recently stumbled back upon the Behance Network. It’s basically a MySpace/Facebook for designers and other creatives. I’ve really enjoyed that it’s somewhat screened, hopefully this will filter the junk that sites like deviantArt have. While I was taking a look around my new account there, I got lost on a tangent and wound up reading about “The Action Method.”

Inspiration at This Ain’t No Disco

July 21st, 2008 1 Comment

Ok, so if I’ve spent more than an hour on a site (or re-visited it 10+ times), I guess I should probably share with everyone else!

I found this site either thanks to a link off from nclud about their new diggs, or maybe somewhere off popurls.com, either way, I love this…

The Grid Life

Grid Life

WOW! I just stumbled upon this little gem. (Thanks David) This is a very cool, very simple, and flexible grid overlay.  Using jQuery, you can set column number, gutter and sub columns in this overlay… and even toggle on and off! Much easier than commenting out code. Check it out at www.gridlayouts.com!

Shepard Fairey Donates an Original “HOPE”

Shepard Fairey Donates an Original \"HOPE\"

I’m passing this along from it’s original source at Joy Engine. I’ve loved this piece since I first saw it, and it’s really cool to see one of the originals.

Obama Hope“Shepard Fairey, the contemporary artist whose irreverent works have deconstructed the meaning and methods of propaganda, ironically became the creator of one of the most potent political images in recent history - the OBAMA “HOPE” poster. The image found such immediate resonance with Obama supporters that it became ubiquitous throughout the primary campaign and across the web.”

Sketch 01 banner

Here we go… I’m finally getting back to doing some drawing for fun. As I said in a previous post, one of the reasons I started this whole thing was to make myself get into drawing again.

So, here we go.. back to my roots: COMICS!

Getting Things Done - the Milk

GTD with Remember the Milk

For the past few months (hmm, check that.. past year) I’ve been on a quest to be more productive.

If you haven’t heard about David Allen’s Getting Things Done (GTD), I strongly suggest you take a look. I love then idea of clearing ‘stuff’ out of your brain and accessing it only when you really need to. After learning about the system, I’ve been on a mission to get it to work for me.

The ABSOLUTE must for me to succeed in some process, is its ease of use. If I have to put more than a minimum amount of effort into something past the initial set up, it won’t happen, it just won’t. Either I have too much going on. or am just too ADD, but I lose interest in things quickly. There’s a reason I “outsource” the cleaning of my house, and cannot pay a bill if I have to write a check or can’t do it online…
